What is this hole on the side of iPad 2?

It's just a bad render job from Apple.. They accidentally put the "top" controls on the side of the iPad.. it's not a real picture of a real iPad..
It's either an old mockup or a bad Photoshop job.

Visit that page and look under "All-new design." It shows the white model from the left. No hole. There is nothing on the left side, just like the first one.

No the render was fine. It's just bad editing. They didn't let the iPad in landscape mode swing all the way around to the front before cutting away.
Well technically, it is the side in the bad photoshop.. so the OP is correct saying it's the side.. but it's all nullified being that it's just a bad render.
Hmm.. then why is the "top" as long as the sides.. and the sides look shorter? The iPad is rectangular, the top controls are on the sides in the pic, not just that the ipad is in landscape mode (It's not actually, it's standing up in portrait mode - the controls are in the wrong area).. Either way, it's just a render, I doubt it's a real photo-shoot of the iPad. A
No. If you notice how the icons are arranged, it's in landscape mode, so it is definitely the top.
Come to find out, if you stare long enough at the picture, you really don't tell if it's the side, or the top.. no matter how you shake it.. the angle is too deceiving.. At first glance, it looks like it's standing up in portrait to me.. but after a while, I could see what you see.. so who knows.
For reference.. To me, it looks like the top and bottom in this picture are the shorter ends.
Look at the icons. 5 icons per row. The iPad is in landscape mode, not portrait.
The sides don't look as they should because it's being rotated around to the front. Watch the video.
