i have been wondering this for a long time but idk what it is
if u tilt ure iTouch and have light showing on it above the screen there is a circle like thing and i would really like to know why it is there

probably an ambient light sensor.
 
That would be the light sensor. It brightens or darkens your screen depending on the surrounding light source(s) it senses.
 
That little circle just happens to be the iPod's Ambient Light Sensor (ALS). It isn't very effective on the iPod for some reason, but all it does it adjust the screens brightness based on how much light is in the room you are in. (More light = brighter screen, less light = dimmer screen.)
