No idea what it is but it seems to start upon startup. I don't use any form of speech-input, speech to text or any processes that would call for my Mac to speak...

Speech Synthesis Server is the process that allows the time to be heard on the hour, and allows voice input. If you do not need any of these things, go to System Preferences>Accounts>YOUR ACCOUNT>Login Items and remove it.

Yup. The only apps that startup are what I intended to startup.

I just realized that when I disable the "Speak selected Text when the key is pressed" in Speech it goes away.

WTF!

I had to enable that to make Safari read bed time stories to me and now I have to use the stupid Speech services to do it!?

Does anyone know how to make Safari read text without that crap? It takes up 40mb of ram which is hell when I only have 1,024mb.

I was able to do this in Leopard but not now in Snow Leopard ><

How to return SpeechSynthesisServer to startup items

I've lost my login items from time to time. In systems preferences, navigate to accounts/login items. Add an item and navigate to the following address:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/SpeechSynthesis.framework/Versions/A/Resources/SpeechSynthesisServer.app

Oh sorry for not updating. Even though Speech does not show up in the Services menu it does show up in the Secondary click menu! Easy as!!

Thanks all!

Thanks for the info! My macbook has been running in overdrive ever since I installed leopard and I could never figure out why... I don't know why I didn't think to look at the activity monitor until now... but Speech Synthesis Server was taking up 92% of CPU activity! As much as I like my mac to speak to me, it's not worth the excessive strain on the fan. If anyone figured out a way to enable the clock to speak without this, please let me know. Thanks!
