I've just got an Apple-refurbished Pro 14 and very nice it is too. The only thing I've noticed is that the battery seems to drain more rapidly than I'd expect on what is essentially a brand new, top-tier phone (Apple put new batteries in refurbs).

I got up at 9am with the phone charged fully, and it has sat beside me at work all day - I have used it a little bit for messaging and so on mostly on WiFi, but no calls, no games, no video - very light use. It's now at 55%.
On my first full day with the phone it was down to 20% when I went to bed around midnight.

If I were using my phone actively all day then maybe I could understand but to be barely making it through the day when I'm barely using it seems a bit surprising, I thought the days of having to be careful how much I used my phone were behind us.. if I was out hiking and taking lots of photos and using GPS I would be concerned it might die on me.

The phone is updated as far as iOS. I do not see any apps obviously taking a huge amount of background processing. The battery app shows in the last 24 hrs I have 3h 46min screen active and 47min screen idle.
So is this about what I should expect, and are there any obvious things I can do? Does the always-on display use much battery?

If you feel something out of the blue with your battery then you should call up Apples customer service and let them know your battery doesn't last as long as you expect, maybe it could be something they can look into for you

I don't know if it's unexpected because I never had this phone before.. that's why I asked :)

It seems to me that getting through a full day on a charge is expected these days but I'm not sure - obviously a few years back it was common to have to recharge during the day.

My experience is that when you get a new phone it takes a week or so for the battery life to settle in. The phone is getting used to a lot of things running in the background and how you use it. I would give it a bit more time and see if it improves. If not, call Apple.

First days there is indexing and photo album processing running in background. The always on also eats up about an hour. Screen brightness of course as well.

5-6 hours SOT is doable
