what is wrong with my mbp and the sleep function?

when I wake up my macbookpro from sleep, sometimes it shows a grey pixelated, "generation square" type of screen. What's going on? I have to force shut down. I typically don't like doing that. Any ideas?

Not sure about what the problem is, but maybe try resetting the PMU and see if that resolves the issue.
