Probably History of Violence by John Wagner although the Complete Geisha by Andi Watson or The Push Man etc. by Yoshihiro Tatsumi come close! :)

Hannibal?

I'm tired and not thinking straight - that's kind of like what your looking for right?

Can't pick just one...

Alan Moore's From Hell and Charles Burns' Black Hole. You could say my interests are a bit "dark."

It's not out yet (although the five comics that comprise it are) but I'm really looking forward to The Keep from F. Paul Wilson and Matthew Smith.

Have to agree with leekohler, the Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin. I read that almost 25 years ago (has it been THAT long??), and it still has an impact on me today. I remember the futileness of his fight, the denial, and finally his ultimate submission. Removing the illusion of death.

Finality.

God it's been ages since i read all my comics! They're all in the attic now.
The only one that comes to mind right now is Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. Think thats the name anyhow. Twas very dark but a great read.

On the topic of Manga, I remember reading Appleseed once or twice. Did they ever make a Guyver graphic novel? I loved the cartoon but the film Mutronics was terrible!!

Watchmen, by Alan Moore.

Another vote for Watchmen. I would have been just another [good] 'book if it hadn't been for the comic-in-a-comic pirate story, for me at least. Something about the symmetry of the stories made everything else work for me.
