Hello all and Happy New Year!

I have been doing more photography and time-lapse videos lately and upgraded to a iMac 5K. For the internal drive, I went with the 512 SSD and I also have an external G-Tech 8TB Raid Thunderbolt connected.

My question is: what is your personal preference on organizing files between the internal and external drive? I know this is a real problem for video professionals since movie files take up so much space but also need fast HDD speeds to work on.

I've done a lot of research and the two main options I've found are:

  1. Move the entire Home directory to the external.
  2. Make symlinks to only the specific folders I want to move, like Pictures, Music, etc.

However, I've heard there are problems with both approaches and I'm looking for advice on choosing how to organize my files. In total, I have around 2.5TB of data so far and expect that to grow quickly this year. I also have quite a few heavy files between Dropbox, iTunes, and Web Design work, all of which I was planning to store on the external.

Thanks for your time.
