I can get a 2012 retina macbook pro 15" 8gb 256gb ssd for $765

or a

2014 retina macbook pro 13" 8gb 128gb ssd $775

Which would be better for me? I plan to use it for programming and simple everyday tasks...maybe run a virtual machine or 2 purely for learning

thank you

You'll want the larger ssd hands down.

128GB is starting to crimp the styles of the "average" use patterns you describe...

I have a 2013 15" rMBP and it's been a great workhorse. The 2012 for a sub $1K price point isn't a bad deal at all.
