So before the summer started i took a look at the ibooks and you couldnt buy a dvd-rom model. there was cdrom and combo drive available in both 12" and 14". Well summer is over so i went to check on the ibooks again and what do you know, apple scrapped the cdrom 14" model and added the 12" dvd-rom model. But... education models still reflect the old model scheme --- ie no dvdrom. so if you want to play dvds its cheaper to buy without the education discount (save ~$200!). what is apple doing? its so odd how the continually screw the education market and then wonder why Dell surpassed them in education. offering 3% discounts on the consumer models and not all consumer models is ridiculous.
