Recently heard someone complain about battery drain in his Windows laptop, which I also remember very clearly from my days as a student.

Recently got an old MacBook Pro and noticed battery is quite good while sleeping (it does use some).

What is it that enabled Apple to minimize battery usage while the computer is sleeping?

The hardware is quite similar right? Both Win and Mac uses Intel CPUs and regular disks, ram, and so on.

So this must be a software thing?

I guess I am just curious about this.

Thanks!!!

PS - Even brand new Windows latpops can't come close to the standby time of old Macs.

macOS sleep/hibernate does use relatively little power. When it works right. I suspect this is simply result of integration - Apple writes OS, hardware drivers, as well as firmware; number of different hardware combinations is very limited. They can do optimization & testing Microsoft has no chance to do.

On MS surface devices it is the same as on macs...
