What messaging app to use with disconnected iPhone 3g?

I have a 3G iPhone that had its number disconnected when my wife and I upgraded hardware.

My kids can use the 3G at home with WiFi.

What good messaging app can be setup with the phone having an active number?

I love WhatsApp but I'm not sure if an active tel ### is required.

I'm trying to avoid needing an email account like yahoo or aol mssgr etc.

If I can't find one that doesn't require an account I guess I'll go with Kik, but just wondering what's available.
