I was thinking of taking my iPhone with me on a trip. Basically to have the iPod portion with me for entertainment's sake. I don't want to incure any international costs (if that's even possible).

Anyone know what needs to be done to prevent extra charges? Is it even worth the risk?

Well, if you just want it to be an iPod, put your phone in Airplane Mode and leave it that way. But otherwise, first thing I'd do is go under settings and make sure fetch new data and data roaming (under network) are off.

If you do think you'll make a few calls, AT&T has a roaming plan for $6 per month that will greatly reduce your rates. You can add it just before your trip and drop it just after, and they'll pro-rate it.
