If you watch the 2007 Apple keynote when the iPhone debuted, the first thing Jobs says when he unveils the device is that “It fits beautifully in the palm of your hand.” This is the mini.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts on what happens next with the mini. Does it just slowly die or does Apple continue with it in some way?

Personally I can see Apple continuing it as a separate line like they do with the iPad mini. Not cutting edge specs but it’s kept up to date every couple of years for those who want it.

Yes it wasn’t a huge hit but lots were sold and maybe with slightly lesser specs and a cheaper price it would hit its stride.

If the Mini form factor is kept alive in any form, it'll be as the next (or one of the next) SE updates. Or, maybe more likely, they'll use the iPhone XR body for that.

Tastes change and can change again but the 12 mini and 13 mini simply didn't sell well the last couple of years. Despite their relatively low prices, neither were among the top seven best-selling iPhone models in 2021.
