What operating system will I need to restore my MacBook?

I have the Februrary 2008 macbook. I bought it about a week ago off someone on gumtree. It hadn't been restored so i figured the grey installation ones would work. After erasing the content on the hard drive i inserted disk 1. After then selecting what language it popped up saying 'OS X cannot be installed on this computer.' After looking at the grey disk again it said 2007 so i'm guessing it was the wrong one. Anyway i was wondering if i just buy an operating system off Apple would i be able to install it correctly? Basically i can't access my macbook and i have no clue what operating system to buy because i'm new to mac. Thanks for the help!

Get a retail Snow Leopard disc from Apple. Not only will that boot and run on your Macbook, but it is perhaps the best operating system for it as well.
