What OS for late 2006 Imac c2d 1.8

Hi, got a refurbed late 2006 17 inch 1.8 C2D imac for my wifes mum so she can use the Isight while we are overseas.. She currently has a Imac G5 1.6ghz 17 inch so shes used to using one.

Ill be setting it up for her when it arrives in a couple of days.

any idea what os will be best/fastest on this Imac? Ive got Leopard and Snow Leopard to install.

Spec... as per the vendor..



Imac Core 2 Duo 1.8ghz

120gb HD (is that Ide or Sata?)

512kb ram (ive got a 1 gb stick to go in there (so i would think that would make it 1.25gb

17 inch screen.

Wifi/bluetooth

So what OS would run better/faster? i would probably think Snow leopard??

any help would be appreciated..

It'll run Snow Leopard and Lion fine. I prefer Snow Leopard, Lion just destroys front row, and exposee in my opinion.

-your hd should be min 160gb and it's sata

-i have similar but 2.0...which has ati x1600 vs yours with intel GMA 500

-i run snow leopard with ease...even with my stock 1 gig ram...ive read issues with fan noise ect when using lion on these so im passing on that upgrade

thanks guys, are you guys all the way up to 10.6.8? or stopped somewhere along the line around 10.6.4.. what is the fastest update? ive heard peeps say that 10.6.3 was fast, then it started to get a little slower with .4 and so onwards..??

10.6.8 Update is the fastest and safeist from what i seen on my macbook 08 2.4ghz C2D and you get the mac app store with 10.6.7+
