what PowerVR graphics core will the next iphone have This is an Imagination Technologies PR I stumbled upon from October 2008, it's by far the most revealing of all PRs from IMG about this:

Imagination's partners for POWERVR SGX include Intel, NEC, Renesas, Samsung, Sigma Designs and Texas Instruments as well as a major OEM. POWERVR SGX535 and SGX530 are sampling or in volume production. SGX540 is licensed to more than five partners, and has taped out this quarter in multiple SoCs, while SGX531 and SGX520 are in design with several licensees
.
This data has bunch of consequences, including:
- No tape-outs for SGX520/531 yet.
- There likely aren't any licensees for SGX 545.
- There are 5 partners for SGX 540, which is a huge number.
- [2;5[ SGX 540 tape-outs in Q4, in time for MWC/CTIA announcements.

It'd certainly be a very interesting development if Apple was one of partners
of course, this doesn't exclude the possibility they just didn't tape-out anything yet and are lagging behind badly. Who knows

SGX 530 is now the most likely possibility, SGX 540 second, and SGX 520 third.
what do you think

SGX 540 is for MIDs. Too much power draw for smartphones.
from what i heard it still consume lees power than gpu core in the tegra
here are the powervr numbers for SGX 530

you see little bit about power draw for SGX 540
and to answer your question yes SGX 540 can be used in a smartphones
for ex-shamble if it was used in the iphone the Battery life would go down about an hour maybe lees if used a smart gpu scaling

The latest technology generation is branded PowerVR SGX. Anandtech reports that the new graphics architecture improves over MBX in part in that "pixel, vertex and geometry instructions are executed by a programmable shader engine, which Imagination calls its Universal Scalable Shader Engine (USSE)."

The report also states that Imagination's new SGX graphics cores range "from the PowerVR SGX 520 which only has one USSE pipe to the high end SGX 543MP16 which has 64 USSE2 pipes (4 USSE2 pipes per core x 16 cores). The iPhone 3GS, I believe, uses the 520 - the lowest end of the new product offering." It has not yet been confirmed what version of the SGX design the new iPhone 3G S uses.

Looks like the 520.

Looks like the 520.
but if it is 520 then have to say i am imprest :) the Press Release was posed in October and going from no tape out to final produce in about 6 moths
that is impressive it were more likely that it is the 530 in the iphone

Yeah, my statement was half-correct. It seems their intentions are MIDS, UMPCs, and high-end smartphones. Still there's no reason to count out their next 5xt cores, which are available in 1 to 16 core configurations, with excellent scaling qualities. However, I do not anticipate another gfx core update in the next phone. Every other seems more logical.

well say when making a SoC many things to considerer like how big dice area
should be performance heat power draw ext... but for apple the most important thing was compatibility explicit as the iphone 3g will still be sold
40 m people with the i3g the old aps and sugs that's is vii the performans gane should be not big efnotf to destroy the old platform but big efnof for people to upgrade also for the oldaps to run on the new iphone also one of
the resone apple will use powervr for long time all powervr hardware are backward comparable whith the old one like the powervr is the only mobile gpu that supports both opengles 1 and 2 and has best performans per power
and dice area
please not that i writing this wile sick so my speling maybe off
