can anyone recommend a program that I can use to cut up existing music tracks, re-assemble, add basic effects and record? I don't necessarily need to create beats but am hoping more to cut and mix existing audio in much the same way a DJ would cut and mix existing tunes into something new.

Any ideas what program I can get my hands on that would do this type of thing?

Garageband would do pretty well, but it sounds like Abelton Live might be an option, if you don't mind the price tag, and a bigger learning curve in comparison to Garageband.

As a side note, certain hardware (M-Audio keyboards, audio interfaces and such) often include a free cut down version of Live, maybe worth checking out!
