Finally back to OS X on my new SR MBP :)

Does anyone have any freeware programs I should install?

I am looking for a good text editor replacement and bittorrent client.

so far I have installed

VLC
Flip4Mac
Perian for Quicktime
Quicksilver

If anyone could recommend some other programs/widgets I should install I would appreciate it a lot.

Transmission is better than Azureus for the simple stuff...

I second NeoOffice...there are great lists here :)

FTP: Transmit or alternatively Cyberduck or FUGU
WEB: Flock or Firefox (maybe give Camino a try)
IM: Adium
VOIP: Skype
Widgets: Callwave to send free sms; iStat for system monitoring

Quicksilver is popular among many users too, but I just can't get used to it...

I don't really use texteditors, so I can't help you with that. Maybe check BBEdit or textwrangler. if you're a writer you may also wanna try Scrivener.

Check out my profile at http://osx.iusethis.com/user/antonio You can browse everyone's profile, and all available apps there.
Sounds like you're starting off in the right direction. Flip4Mac is definitely essential, and they have a new dvd imaging app out called Drive In
http://www.flip4mac.com/drivein.htm
Lately I've been making great use of an app called info.xhead

This list is endless...you'll find lots of text editors in the iusethis.com site, and you should probably check out http://www.versiontracker.com/ ....another good source, which you might know about already.

I have a lot (in no particular order):

iWork - Keynote makes PowerPoint look like a toy, and Pages has a lot going for it.
iCal - A great program for my disorganized mind.
Mail - Best mail client ever. Period.
iTunes - Nuff said.
Safari - Best web browser in my opinion.
FireFox - For everything Safari can't do.
Address Book - Another great program for my disorganized mind.
iPhoto - Over 500 photos, so I need soewhere to put them.
Automator - Mainly use it to batch convert images.
Adium - Great to chat with my AIM/.Mac/GoogleTalk friends.
Skype - Talk to my friend all the time, great replacement for the phone.
Celtx - Great for writing all those crazy movies that I will probably never be able to make
HandBrake - Anime on my iPod. Nuff said.
Google SketchUp - It's just so fun!
iStopMotion - One word: Legos.
Vienna - Helps me stay updated with MacRumors. :D
Cash Box - A great way to manage bank accounts, that is easy on the bank account (it's free).

And last but not least:
Mac OS X - The OS software that makes it all happen. :D

I wanna add Applejack to my list of favourites. Cocktail and Onyx aren't bad either. Pick any of them and you can keep your mac in perfect shape.

Programs- Quickslver
without a doubt the coolest free program I have ever used. Practically eliminated my dock.

Widgets-
iStat pro-all the info you need to know about your mac.
MacTip- I honestly learn a ton of stuff from this.
Conference Call Omni- Lets me track mutiple sports teams, scores and schedules.
