Hi there, thinking of getting rMBP 15" 2.0Ghz 8GB, but also found that maybe it's better to get MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012? I know that 2013 has PCie SSD, but if was to swap 2012 to SSD maybe there is no point of getting 2013?

Depends what you want to do with it. You'll see a speed increase in the pci, but not huge really. The biggest diff is the swank screen.

swank screen? :) i'm mostly will be using for Photography, Lightroom, Photoshop.

Right now i'm using D600 but in the feature thinking of D800

Then, unless you have serious storage needs, I would think the determining factor would be whether you want a retina screen.

Yes i do have external display, but i know Retna is good i've seen it.

So i went to apple store just to test it out, i have 20 D800 NEF files, opened Photoshop and used Merge to HDR Pro, and here are my findings:

rMBP 8GB: 3:35
rMBP 16GB + GF750: 2:41

I've tested times from selecting batch and starting processing till the first screen that showed layer of EV's.
And used this image: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/nikon-d800/YDSC_0099.NEF.HTM

So now thinking do i really need more it's 500 pounds in UK more i know.

Could any one that has rMBP 2012 with 650GT do this test please?

I have a rmbp (my signature) and I use it for Ps and Lr with the nef files from my D610. I have no problems with it. Why are you thinking about changing to a D800? Only benefit is massive resolution. (and the filesize that comes with that) do you wanna plaster a building front with a photo? :D

lol :) i'm just thinking of the feature :) right now i have D600.

Also did the same test on my home PC:

i5 2500K @ 4.4Ghz
16Gb Ram
Samsung Pro SSD 256GB
GeForce 580GTX
Windows 8.1

And got 2:38

I don't know how relevant merging in Photoshop is as a benchmark for Lightroom.

The way I use LR on my rMBP is to operate on smart previews. The full-res raw files are on an external drive, which I only leave connected for importing and exporting. All other operations (organising with the Library module, tweaking the with Developer, even exporting to the web, since smart previews exceed the quality requirements for this) are handled with Smart Previews. With this process I don't have to worry about space or having an external drive plugged in at all times I am using LR, and operations are fast.

So with this flow the importance processing capability of the MBP largely comes down to the number of images and frequency that you import and export.

As a photographer, I wouldn't dream of going back to a non-retina MBP.

I personally went from a 13" laptop to a 15" laptop because I felt the screen real estate was too confining for PS and LR. Mind you it was a 2010 laptop to a 2012 rMBP so I'm not sure if that logic holds true for the 13" rMBP but I suspect it does.

Alright so i'm getting rMBP 15 2013, now about IR problems, i was thinking getting from US it's cheaper, but was wandering maybe US have more of these LG panels then UK? any thought about that?

Just got me new rMBP 15" 750, it has LG, manufacturing date 2week 2014 January, and no IR did 10 min test. For now happy, hopefully will not have it in the feature.

I'll try my 3rd screen replacement next week. If I don't get a good one, maybe they'll give me a brand-refurb-new-one-with-other-or-the-same-issues. But it's like a sport... I'll keep exchanging because it makes me healthier going to an AASP every week.

Just checked it has slight yellow tint on right side, so i took my spide3 calibration tool, and on Right side it shows around 6400, Left - 6600, Centre 6500

I have an early 2011 13'' MBP and used it for LR too. It has no issue with my 5D III RAW files too. Is the screen too small? Sometimes but I am happy with it. Who says you need a retina to be a photographer?

The Retina display is quite nice compared to the old displays.

The computer is also lighter and it has better battery life.

All these I think it's worth it upgrade, for me anyways.
