what should i format new hard drive as?

i am about to use carbon copy cloner to put all of the stuff from my old HD to my new HD, what should i have my new HD formatted as?? does it matter? right now i have it formatted as mac os extended (journaled)... will this work?

also, i just reformatted the new drive and didn't do anything else to it...should i have lion on it first before cloning??

i had lion on it, but reformatted it now because i was clinging fresh, so maybe its still on there
