I just got my refurbished 2017 MacBook pro 15 inch with 512gb of storage and 560 4GB. First time mac OS user here so bear with me What applications should I download, should I boot camp, parallel, VM etc. Are there any tests I can run to make sure the notebook is working properly? Earlier I was downloading fortnite and suddenly my applications froze. I could only close them by right clicking the taskbar at the bottom and hitting quit. The top bar where the battery and setting are wouldn't reply, nor would the button that closes the window respond. I had to hold the power button to shut it down. I haven't turned on the laptop since I went to do other things. What can I do to make sure everything is running fine? Also should I update to High Sierra?

Do you NEED Windows? If not, don't mess with Bootcamp/Parallels/VM. What do you plan on using the system for? That is what would really dictate what you install.

I would like to have windows in case I do any kind of gaming. It would run smoother in boot camp where I can assign it more ram right? I will be using my laptop for general things and I will be learning how to code as well. Through my physics degree the most coding I've down has been through mathematica which really isn't much. Right now I just want general information and recommendations like I believe there is some app by the name of coconut battery? That allows me to monitor the battery? Thus far I've seen it draining rather quickly but then again I haven't plugged it in at all since it came with 80%.

If you really want to "game", keep the PC around.
They just do that better.

I wouldn't install BootCamp unless there was a reason that a "virtual machine" setup for Windows was unsatisfactory. I've just seen too many reports here of problems from folks using it.

"Must have" apps?
For me, that would be CarbonCopyCloner to create a bootable cloned backup of one's internal drive. INVALUABLE to have around if you ever get into an "I can't boot!!!!" moment...

I agree with @Fishrrman to an extent, it really depends on the "gaming" you plan to do. I was a relatively "hardcore" CoD player on PC (I would play for HOURS at night), I've now switched to Macs and haven't missed CoD. I still play some games but nothing the Mac can't handle natively.

Bootcamp doesn't "assign" RAM, Bootcamp allows you to natively boot Windows on a Mac, without macOS getting in the way. Coconut Battery just allows you to monitor the overall degradation of the battery capacity/life, it is not intended to actively monitor battery usage and help with extending your time on battery.

Attached is a screenshot of CoconutBattery.
