What should of happened is all that has happened but also Apple should of offered a buy back program for S1 if your upgrading to S2 or if you have a S1 then they would water proof and upgrade chip set for free or small charge on your S1.
 
The original series just isn't old enough yet. I think Apple will offer something of a trade-in program once the original series reaches 2 years of age. Maybe they will even start offering something sooner than that. The Gold Edition owners might be in a spot, but I bet Apple will offer some kind of upgrade option for those models as well.

I bet not because the $10,000-17,000 Edition has been discontinued and hence there's no upgrade for those. Keep in mind that these same people tend to be wealthy enough to go on a $30,000 shopping spree on a lazy weekday and think nothing of it. They wouldn't care or think about trading in.
