What size HD did you get in your most recent 2019/20 mbp? I have been trying to decide for the last week and its driving me crazy between 2-4tb. I have 850gb used right now full of photo's in my 2016 mbp. I dont store anything else because I was running out of space about a year ago so I deleted all my movies and such. I am a photographer and was thinking it would last me another 3-4 yrs with an extra 1.2 tb. I did realize that for the last year-2 I have been shooting alot more film and that in 2016 I shot over 500gb of digital shots. I'd like to do some video as well on the 16 mbp. I know I could use external drives as well. It just always seems so inconvenient haha.

From what you say, I think you know that, if you got the 2TB, you would always be wondering about and lusting after the missing 4TB hard drive that you really want.

The way I see it, this is an investment that should last several years. So, make your peace with ordering the 4TB and then give yourself peace of mind and enjoy your new Mac.

Have you thought about using an external SSD for storing your photos, in addition to the one you would have inside your Mac?

Oops! See where you already mentioned external drives. But why inconvenient? First, if you use external SSDs, the speed should be decent, and especially if you install such an SSD (Samsung ones are the best) inside an enclosure that has a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C interface. Secondly, after initially storing them on your internal SSD, you can easily move them to the external SSD.

Apple overcharges for SSD upgrades. Particularly if you get a 4 port model, just get a Thunderbolt enclosure for $120 and a 2TB NVMe M2 drive for another $270. You’ve just saved $200 on the upgrade and your drive is just as fast, if not faster. If you don’t care about the speed, just get a USB-3.2 Gen 2 enclosure for about $25. You’ll still get about 1 GB/s speeds and just saved $300.
