what software do i need to make split screen videos using an ipad 2 or macbook pro?

i play guitar and since i dont have a band i want to make split screen videos of myself playing the lead/rythm guitar.
i pretty much have the basic equipment, i think.(cameras,camcorders, ipad 2, macbook,etc)
i need a software to make split screen videos. ive tried sony vegas pro.( dont know how to use it)
windows movie maker (isnt capable of making splitscreen videos)
and some people have told me i cant make split screen videos on imovie.

i really think it woud've been helpful if they had added video recording (split screen) in garageband.
so please help me out with some suggestions

Google iMovie split screen, saw a video on youtube where the guy had used the picture-in-picture function to get something approaching it.

Wouldn't it have been even better had they put it in iMovie, their amateur video editing app?

thanx a lot the picture-in-picture should serve my purpose.
its good enough but i was wondering if i can sync a recorded garageband track to the video of imovie or is the microphone good enough to capture every detail of my elec guitar or any other instrument.
