I'm an iTunes Mac OSX newbie and have just one simple audio task to perform... shortening the length of some longer songs in iTunes before I export them to my iPod or burn them to a CD. I found one shareware program called Audacity ...but it appears to import MP3 but not MP4 files, which I beleive I need for the newest iTunes compatibility.

Any suggestions?? (SFX: Applause and thanks from me!)

A bunch of free and relatively simple solutions are discussed in this thread. iTunes can covert into or from mp3, m4a and lossless depending on what's set in Prefs > Advanced > Importing.
For maximum quality import as lossless (or AIFF) and cut, edit, compress from there.

agreed...

I use GarageBand for this as well. Works like a charm.
