Since using 10.9 as a developer, I've noticed certain volumes on my Mac Pro5,1 have been "compromised". After installing the first GM, 2 of my SATA W.D. HDD's reported bad sectors, one failed. W.D. sent replacements and I was able to recover my data. The same thing happened on my 2012 Mac Mini. Windows reports the drives as properly functioning.

I wiped my Mac Pro's SSD boot and a clean 2TB HDD, clean installed yesterday 10.9 from a USB drive (removed each drive to isolate possible SSD issues as reported by some). For some reason, newly created non-boot volumes have hidden "Boot OS X" partitions. Unless this is a new "feature", in my 10+ years I've never seen this in OS X HFS journaled volumes.

Additionally, if I delete a file on my "Media" HDD it prompts me for my password even though I have read & write access, similar to deleting a file on a server. I've applied permission changes to the volume and verified access.

Interestingly, the "Media" volume reports "disk5" but no "disk5sX" with "EFI", "Media" and "Boot OS X" hidden partitions. Unless I missed something, hidden partitions should count especially as they can be mounted. Regardless, drive permissions should be functional and "Boot OS X" hidden partitions shouldn't exist on non-boot volumes, no?

Any one have any idea what is happening?
