Ahh, so my birthday is coming up and my family is asking me, what do I want for my birthday? And truth be told... I DONT KNOW! I would love something for my Mac, but I am not sure what. The only thing I can think of is a good external HD, my 200GB is getting full and I only have 23GB on my MBP.

A little background on me, I do a lot of Computer Science work as well as Video editing, prosumer level, and I have recently been working with NASA and have a few science projects, so the usual papers and presentations are needed.

Currently the software I have is iLife 06' and iWork 06' as well as FCE. I have a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse for my MBP when it is at my desk, and I have "okay" speakers that are from like '98.

Any ideas of good, I suppose, "Geek Products"?

Slingbox Pro
EyeTV Hybrid
Apple TV
iPhone

You can be more creative...(assuming whoever is buying you the gift has $$ :))

Ahh.. well I asked for an iPhone today and I was reminded how much it was from my family and got a quick NO! So sadly it is out of the question.... I don't have a TV that is compatible with the Apple TV, and I am looking to cancel cable so I dont know about the EveTv or Slingbox, even though I would love to have them!!!
More Ram or an External HD does still sound good though!!

Any more ideas out there!! Cmon Mac Geeks! :)

-Maybe iWork '08? (someone had to say it :p)

-Maybe upgrade the internal HD for more storage on-the-go (or a small portable external)

-Maybe some new clothes to present those presentations in

-There's the thing you can't go wrong with, money! :D

if you don't know what you want, i'd ask your parents if you could take a rain check on a gift until you figure out what you want. it could be that external hard drive or maybe a new ipod when they're finally updated. if you don't know now, don't force yourself to choose a gift if you don't have to. if you're forced to choose, i'd take cash if i could. happy birthday, btw.

2gb RAM
External Drive
iPod
TV Tuner
Bluetooth mouse (if you don't have one)
High quality speakers
Another battery if you're one the go

Stuff like that

Happy Birthday. :D

I'm in the same boat. My B-day is this weekend and everyone's asking me what I need. My answer is it's not a question about what I need (which I can manage myself) but what I want. And I told them I want a Mac Pro with two monitors. So family and friends pooled money and got me a...

I'll let you know after I find out this weekend. :)

My family does not celebrate gift giving days/holidays. Instead we give gifts when we feel like it. To put it bluntly.

Basically it works like this. I discover that my brother needs a nice shirt for going out in. What I is buy one for him. BAM! I have given him a gift he needs and will use with out having to rush out and buy a gift for him because it is his birthday. My brother might find I need new shoes so he buys them for me. My mother might need a new fancy vase I buy one for her. My dad might need a new Hand saw I buy one for him. Simple effective and no one misses out on that one thing they wanted but were embarrassed to ask for because they buy it themselves. Practical gift giving is what the system works one.
