an iPhone 4

or

Curve 3G and Playbook

what to do???

Wife has an iPhone and iPad which she isn't over the moon with.

I have an iMAc

Need device(s) for email, phone calls and brief web browsing.

Apps mean nothing.

thoughts..?

I'd play around with your wife's iPhone for a little bit, if you like it then get the iPhone 4. Although personally even though I like the iPhone I'd be tempted by the blackberry just to play around with the playbook. so either one is probably a good deal for you.

cheers, thing that puts me off with iPhone is its call ability.

I know that it isn't great in marginal reception areas, compared to other phones on the same network in the same location. Thats her biggest beef with it.

If you don't like the Curve 3G and/or Playbook you could probably sell them as nearly new and buy an unlocked iPhone 4 outright.
