I'm picking up some brand spankin speedy new Macs soon and wondered what to do with the G3's I have, I'm a waste not want not type of guy so .....

any ideas ?

You could probably use them as servers, maybe for some extra storage space. I usually install ubuntu on my old computers and use them as servers.

I sold a 5 year old PC on Craigslist to someone who wanted an inexpensive computer for his kids to use.

Use as a fileserver for iTunes or storage.*
Give to a kid or local charity shop. Anybody round your way have need for an old computer?

*This be my plan for my current iMac when I get a new desktop PC.

What version of Mac OS are the G3's running?

Both on 10.4.11.

The Grape iMac is 450MHz, upgraded with a 80Gb HD.

The Graphite is 500MHz with a stock 30Gb HD.

Thanks for the input so far everyone.

Anymore ideas out there?

cheers

~m

Do they have a DVD drive?

If they do, you could put all your iTunes music on there, and put one in your kitchen to watch movies, listen to music, etc. in your kitchen while cooking.

If you didn't live in Europe, I would pay shipping and take one from you, because I love iMac G3s. :D

^ both have DVD rom , though the graphite's drive spits DVD's back out .....wish I could fix that .

yeah they are cool machines and a great dvd player / iTunes jukebox

Interested in this server idea, any one have any pointers? I'm new to that sort of thing

I presume you don´t have kids?
I got an Graphite iMac from a place I worked and now I use it as a DVD player in my daughters room.

I didn´t want to put a TV there as I have more controll over how long and what she watch if it´s on DVDs only

^ ye I have two, although too young for DVD's in bedroom yet, a possibility in the future though. saying that we don't really use TV or watch that many DVD's, we're more a music fanatical household  Also we have 4 others living here which also are music fans
