Hey MacRumors! First post here—just joined, but a long time lurker lol. So i just got a 2011 17” MacBook Pro, and i got performed a clean install of MacOS Lion 10.7.5. My question is what should i do with it? Thought about using it as a dvd/cd player, but i thought you guys would have better suggestions for refurbishing old Macs. It’s got a 1Tb SSD, 8Gb DDR3 RAM, and the AMD Radeon HD 6770M. TIA!!

Put 16 GB of RAM into it. Also if that 1 TB SSD is one without DRAM better exchange it for one with DRAM, even if of less space.
Now the advantage of this MacBook is obviously the screen size. Find uses that need screen space. You could use it for trading, although for most trading apps you will need a newer OS, I guess. Maybe you can use browser based apps, like Tradingview with Firefox Dynasty if you insist to run Lion on it.

Ok thanks! That’s really helpful

I have several 2010-2011 MBP 17". With OCLP I have installed modern(ish) MacOSs to them and all have max RAM and a SSD drive. They are perfectly usable in daily laptop roles.

Couple of them even have USB3 ExpressCards. And I also plan to install a newer wifi/BT card to one.

If you are looking for a modern supported OS, MX Linux is an easy install and will fly on your box spec'd as is. I run it on my aluminum unibody 08 MB and 09 MBP with SSD and 8gb ram. Runs great.

It is an excellent os if you are not looking to stay with macos. If you are, I 'd follow the above suggestions, max out your ram and SSd and get something relatively modern installed with OCLP.

My Mom still DDs this laptop running HiSi iirc. I use it every time I go over to visit. When I say visit, I use this term very loosely to describe the technical support I provide my mom n dad in keeping their mesh network up and running, install new devices like network printers etc and making sure they are all seen and usable on their handhelds like their ipads & iphones. :)

They are 76 and 81 years young.

Plenty of life left in that macbookpro and is a beautiful machine - one of my favorite laptop designs of Intel era macs.
