Hi everyone.

When the first iPhone came out in Jun '07 I bought my wife one at the $500 pricepoint to replace her old phone and so we could use it for internet on trips. She will be out of her contract in a few weeks. She is mostly in places where she has wi-fi so she does not have much need for the EDGE connectivity.

I have an old beat-down Nokia and I am outside a contract; in fact, I carry a favourable account from AT&T before it went to Cingular and back, with a discount and no cost for incoming text messages. Where I work right now our internet use is restricted, so I need a fast 3G phone for mail access and such.

My tentative plan is to buy a 3Gs for myself (and lose my nice old account with a discount) so that I can keep my number. The question is what to do with her phone.

Ideally, we'd like to drop here data plan but still use it with wi-fi and as a phone. Any idea if AT&T would let people do this for people whose contracts end?

Even better, I would like to find a way to reduce her phone cost and share minutes, if possible, by joining some sort of a family plan. We mostly talk cell-to-cell so we don't need many minutes. I know that iPhone customers have the usual $10 "add a line" option, but I am guessing that this is for truly new lines, and no way to keep an existing number. Or am I wrong?

If anyone understands all the AT&T policies about this or has good tips or ideas, that would be appreciated!
