Following the introduction of the iPhone 16e in February, along with new iPads and Macs in March, what will Apple's next product announcement be? Based on rumors, a second-generation AirTag item tracker is potentially next up.

Last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new AirTag would be released around the middle of 2025. More recently, a leaker known as Kosutami claimed that Apple plans to release a new AirTag in May or June this year. Both of those timeframes suggest that the next AirTag is up to a month or two away from launching.

Three upgrades have been rumored for the AirTag 2 so far:

  • A second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, for up to 3× longer range compared to the current AirTag. The chip debuted in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding for People feature that can help you to find your friends in crowded places, and it offers a range of up to 200 feet (approximately 60 meters).
  • A more tamper-proof speaker, as a safety measure to reduce stalking.
  • Improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro.
No major design changes are expected.

The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021. In the U.S., an individual AirTag costs $29, and a set of four costs $99.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today introduced AirTag 2, a smaller and more elegantly designed accessory that raises the bar in ways to keep track of and find the items that matter most with Apple’s Find My app to new heights. Whether attached to a handbag, keys, backpack, or other items, AirTag 2 uses Apple Intelligence to tap into the vast, global Find My network and can automatically locate a lost item, all while keeping location data private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption. Built from the ground up and the sky down for Apple Intelligence, it is the most powerful and magical AirTag we've ever created - we think you are going to be slighlty fond of it.

If my bag or car is stolen with a AirTag inside, will The Thief have a function to track by sound and remove the AirTag? Of course, we do not want to violate the thief's privacy or stalk him 😆😆😆 My car or bag? Whatever! Thief's privacy at the first place! xDDDD
In the current AirTag I had to follow some tutorials and break out the speaker inside... I hope that's also possible in AirTag 2.

Removed all the batteries and speakers from multiple that I have, and placed them in my luggage, gf’s luggage, one’s in my car, daily carry backpack, etc. Used the elevation labs product that gives your AirTags a 10-year battery life. It’s been awesome. Gonna get at least one more pack of 4 before the new design change. I hate the speaker

Hopefully AirTags v.3 get something like Apple Watch magnetic charging. Changing out batteries is the biggest weakness of AirTags.
I hope that does NOT happen. It would raise the price quite significantly and who’ll be buying them anymore? I think AirTags need to remain relatively cheap.

Everyone’s a fan of secret tracking until someone slips one on your kid. The world’s bigger than your use case.

You forgot you still get notified that someone is tracking you + how difficult it is to find it on your kid? It’s either left pocket or right or the backpack 🤦‍♂️
The Thief also gets the same notification. Exactly, the world is bigger than your use case. That’s why there are even modified air tags without the speakers being sold out there.

Should be a very small update. Longer range is definitely a possibility. Not expecting anything else to change. A new colour option will be nice.

You're entirely missing the point 😮‍💨. I never suggested tracking a child is the only misuse case, I gave one clear example to show how narrow the thinking was. Your reply, that “you get notified” and can easily find and remove the AirTag, is both naïve and completely undermines your own argument for why AirTags should be silent. There are, for example, well-documented cases, especially involving women, who did get notified but couldn’t find the AirTag in the moment because it was silenced and, for example, attached to their car.

I hope they make it impossible to disable the speaker in the new AirTag, exactly because some idiots are selling silenced ones, arguing that thieves don’t need privacy.

I've retrieved both my bicycle and my motorbike using AirTags with the speaker removed. My bicycle I had two AirTags hidden, one they found but not the other so I followed the thief to his house and got it back. My motorbike I tracked and found stashed in an abandoned garage.

They always stash for a few days in case of trackers, they definitely work.

That's the thing, just because Apple doesn't want to get in hot water with potential responsibilities (stalking-wise), we get a crippled product that misses what for most people would be the most interesting case use.

If I were to find an AirTag tracking my kid...I'd drop off the AirTag in a dark alley...and let the stalker "find my kid."

Or just put it at the end of a gun firing range...

Disagree, we have air tags that stay hidden in our cars and we only have to bring them in once a year or so to swap out the batteries. Having to charge them regularly would be a big PITA.

Nomad makes a travel card with Find My.

Ok, that's actually helpful.

I've got an AirTag in my wallet now, but it does leave an obvious annoying bulge.

I can't tell if that has a speaker though. I don't have it because I'm worried about theft, I just periodically misplace my wallet and the speaker helps me find it.

I have it and it’s great. Much slimmer than a AirTag.
