Just bought my first external Blu-ray burner:

A little more expensive than what others have posted here, but I have always learned that you get what you pay for. This thing is built very well -- even to the point that if you drop it, it will probably survive.

...and it worked. Plugged it into both my retina MBP and iMac and it was immediately recognized.

Of course, you need MacGo Mac Blu-Ray Player (to play DVDs) and Roxio Toast (to burn DVDs), though there are free methods of doing the latter.

Too expensive i guess?

I got an usb 2.0 ASUS BD burner for about $110

Cheap looking for sure....but it will do in a pinch. I will get a better one if the ever make a TB burner...or I'll settle for USB 3.0 12x BD burner that are less portable.

awesome thread! i got a question. the one thing that bothers me about the super drive is rip lock protection. the thing that slows the drive down during a rip. when you go third party bluray/dvd, what are the rip times.
dvd time would be most beneficial for me....

thanks

I purchased this drive for use with my MacMini, it works flawlessly, rips movies with pavtube bluray and also plays though virtual machine with windows and/or boot camp.

Hi Cisco_Kid

Just seeing how you are getting on with your external blu ray drive. I bought a Samsung drive powered by dual USB but I don't think it got enough power from my 2012 Mini as eject button didn't work and it behaved strangely. I mentioned on this post https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15602317#post15602317

Just wondering if you have noticed anything strange about your drive in this manner.

Thanks
