I had a 250GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro with ~60GB available space. It started making some noise so I backed up and brought the machine to the Apple store. They replaced it, the screen and 2 fans and gave me a fresh install of the OS. I did a time machine back-up and now I have 110GB of free space. I'm not missing anything that I've noticed so it seems weird that I gained ~50GB from a fresh install/back-up...

And now, even though I just backed up from Time Machine, time machine started its hourly backup and says it's backing up 31GB? I haven't done anything to the machine since backing it up... so how is there mysteriously 31GB of info on my MBP that isn't in my time machine backups???

Take a look at DiskInventory X, OmniDiskSweeper or GrandPerspective to see where your HDD space went to.

And you can use the

I've used Grand Perspective in the past but how am I going to compare the two now that the old drive crashed?
