iPad Pro What triggers “passcode required” FaceID message?

I have a recurring issue where FaceID won’t work, says something like “passcode is required to enable FaceID”. Now, I understand there is a specific algorithm that forces you to enter the passcode every now and then (on my iPhone I think it’s around once a week), and if you restart the iPad. Also, obviously if it’s having a hard time recognizing your face for some reason.

But those don’t seem to be the case here. I’ll be using my iPad, will set it down for a few minutes, then pick it up again, and it immediately wants the passcode. Not every time, but still typically multiple times a day. Aside from that, FaceId works fine.

Any idea what might be triggering this?
