I have both nytimes and boy geniuse report saying you can do FaceTime over 3G. Is this true, no one else is talking about it. They did say it would be wifi only for 2010, and it's 2011 now. I need clarification

Nvm bgr.com updated there post saying that there not actually sure about it. Damn them. Getting my hopes up like that. I don't know what nytimes is smoking but I think it's a no go.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. If it does happen, it will be, in my opinion, a significant advantage over the AT&T iPhone.

I'm guessing this is more Apple's decision than it is Verizon's decision. Verizon has no problem selling Android phones that do video chat over 3G.

Have you called Verizon or Apple?

OR you could buy two Verizon iPhone 4s. Second one will tether to the HotSpot of the 1st and "think" it's on a Wi-Fi source and voila... Verizon Iphone 4 Facetime on "3G" of Verizon.

Yes, I agree.
Unless you JB it then you can do facetime over 3G.

i use FaceTime quite often with my friends who are in various places in the world, it's not that hard to find a wifi connection these days to use. when i'm not connected it's usually when i'm walking somewhere and personally i don't FaceTime and walk lol

True, but its good to have the ability to do it when there's no wifi around.

yea but in this day and age, it's not hard to find a wifi connection, trains, coaches, hotels, pubs, shopping centres, everywhere has one and i'm not even in a decent town, people properly in the sticks will have hit and miss 3G anyway so FaceTime over 3G will be useless to them. So really, it's not a HUGE issue. theres more important things that are needed above FaceTime over 3G

I agree, its not a huge issue but it could be an inconvinience.
Not every place you're at will have free or open wifi available.

Screw FaceTime, AT&T better get that Mobile hotspot function! I PRAY it won't be an Ad-Hoc Network like the one produced by MyWi. Then, at least, I can connect every one of my devices to it without any issues.

What purpose would Apple have in doing this? The carriers are the ones limiting this feature, which was namely AT&T. Just like they had with tethering. There really is no reason why Verizon shouldn't be able to do Facetime on 3G, unless their network isn't as ready for the iPhone as they are saying. Interestingly, I was able to do video voice calls on an iPhone 3G using an app without any problems and the iphone was not even jail broken.
