Was that ever figured out? I didn't notice a new accessory in the keynote? Or was it the lower priced Ipad 2?

What was the mysterious 39$ item?

Remember the extra SKU added to the system? anyone have any idea what the new 39$ item was?

No, because Apple updated the Smart Covers on the 24th of October last year (http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/24/apple-updates-ipad-2-smart-covers-with-more-vibrant-colors/).

And also the iPhone 4S came out before it - so it is new and must be a slightly updated version of the cable!!

The product number is the same, MD098. And the order of the other new things is out of order. It goes:

The new iPad
AppleCare+ for iPad
Apple TV
Apple Digital AV Adapter
iPad Smart Covers
iPhone 4S
iPhone 4
iPhone - AppleCare+
iPod touch
iPod nano
OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive
MacBook Air
Mac mini
Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch)

When it should go:

AppleCare+ for iPad
The new iPad
Apple TV
iPad Smart Covers
iPhone - AppleCare+
iPhone 4S
iPod nano
iPod touch
OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive
MacBook Air
Mac mini
Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch)
Apple Digital AV Adapter
iPhone 4

I don't know if Im alone in this, but I always suspect that a few weeks before a keynote Apple plans to release more than they actually do and many times a big mystery item gets pulled last minute.

Maybe I'm confusing my wish list with reality but my bet was that the AppleTV was going to support apps and Siri so it would be a special remote for the AppleTV, but they decided to hold off from graduating the ATV from "hobby" to full fledged iOS Family Member until they see if sales spike with the newest update and Mountain Lion Airplay. :D

Also notice how there are currently no questions or reviews of the product... somewhat unlikely if it was launched a year ago with the last iPad...

hmm didnt notice that, i wonder whats different?!

if you search google for Apple Digital AV Adaptor and click the link to the apple store, you'll notice The page you're looking for can't be found.

but the US store shows this page not found with the part number of MC953ZM/A in the URL whereas if you find the AV adapter on the store its part number in the URL is MD098, same thing with the UK store, page not found number is MC953ZM/A whereas if you find the item on the store, it's MD098ZM/A.

I'm wondering the same thing. I have one from when the iPad 2 was launched, and now I'm concerned it magically won't work with the iPad 3rd gen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when it was released for iPad 2, there wasn't an iOS device that supported 1080p...it's only been a factor since the iPhone 4S, and thus it wasn't updated to support the newer iDevices until now.

The iPad 2 when running iOS 5 can sync and playback 1080p content either on screen or via the Digital AV adapter.

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread as this has really been bugging me:

What is so special about the new Digital AV Adapter? Anyone?
