Yes, what week was it made in, and does it have any defects?

Mine is week 34, and has a little light leek, not much.. other then that, it's perfect(the leek is near the voluium bottuns)

Yours was week 36, 2007.
Mine was week 38, 2007. Stil don't know what month that was in.

My math might be off, but that actually implies they started building these 9 months ahead of the release. 36 weeks=9 months. Since they started selling them at the end of June, that means they were manufacturing them in November of 2006.

To me this means that if there are 36 weeks in 9 months, Then my (old) iPhone was made in the 36th week of 2007, or 9th month, which would be around September. That sound s fine to me...

Except that means I have a time traveling iPhone, since I purchased it the very first day it was released in June of 2007. So it's impossible that mine could have been made in SEPTEMBER 2007.

I think your math is a tad bit off... The iPhone wasn't around in 2006?

Right, that's why I am trying to understand the serial number thing. If I bought my phone in June 2007, then the only logical way it could have been made 9 months prior to (roughly) when I purchased it would be November 2006, which makes absolutely no sense. So the serial number method does not match up with my actual serial number in calculating the week it was made.

Like posted, the week of production is the 4th and 5th numbers of your serial #. The year is the 3rd digit (i.e 8=2008, 7=2007) and the first 2 numbers of the serial are the factory code.

So, for my iPhone 3G, serial 5K836xxxxxxx, it was built in factory 5K, on the 36th week (September), of 2008.

This is true for both the first gen and the 3G iPhones.

I'm not sure why Question Fear's serial is implying he has an iPhone built so far before they were actually released. My only thought is that he has a replacement and thought the serial carried over or read it wrong. But that is definitely the formula.

I think that means yours is a refurb.

aha. I was reading the wrong set of numbers. I need to get my reading comprehension checked! Mine was made in the 26th week of 07. Sorry for setting off a confusion storm!

Actually, it doesn't. Apple has confirmed on their discussion board that new 3G's are being assigned 5K serials. There have also been posts from 3G customers that confirm they purchased new iPhones with 5K serials.

This site: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html also confirms that 5K is a code for a factory in China. You can get info about the manufacturing of your iPhone and other Apple products by entering your serial number there.

Mine is 87832 or week 32 of 2008. Replacement for my Launch Day 3G iPhone, was taken out of the new box by myself. I returned my box, accessories and had my receipt in hand and the Genius brought the NIB 3G iPhone from the back and handed it to me to open and fondle my new iPhone...:p
