Okay, total newbie question here. I have a 2013 27" iMac. I'm considering the 5k. How will scale of things on the screen be different. Will everything just be sharper and crisper, with the same scale? Or will more fit on the screen?

it would operate the same principle as current mbp. i.e. several res to choose from or the best retina option which will display images as if 2560 x 1440 but 4 times sharper.
