What has happened in the past to the price of the old phone, between the media event and the new phone hitting shelves? I ask because I have family members who don't need the latest and greatest. Our mobile share plan makes basic phones the same cost as smart phones, so I want to get another low cost smart phone. I would guess they will have an 8 gb 4 for free, and a an 8 gb 4S for $100. But what happens to existing stock of 16/32/64? If I could get him a 16 GB 4S for $100-150 I could find it worthwhile. After all, I could still sell it when he's done with it and make more than an 8 GB phone would get.

Just kicking ideas around and speculating like everyone else. So does anyone remember what happened to the iPhone 4 16 and 32's after the 4S was announced?

From what I personally recall, the price of the iPhone 4 stabalized after the 4S was released, probably because the 4S wasn't a very big cosmetic or overall upgrade/improvement from the 4.

**(used phones, not new)

Same thing as always happens: the old stock gets "clearance priced" at the carrier stores, sometimes 30-40%. These will probably clear out within days.

Meanwhile, Apple withdraws old stock, likely using them for replacement stock, and continues selling a black base model (probably 8GB) of the 4S for $99 with contract. They might also keep selling a base 8GB 4 for free/$.01 with contract.

This is what I was hoping to see. Guess I'll have to hurry in to Best Buy and see what they are doing. :)

The old stock gets sent back to Apple for refurb units and if history is correct, they'll have an 8GB 4S for purchase at $99

Last year, I believe Apple took $50 off the selling price of existing models from the day of the announcement until the day the 4S went on sale.

Then, the "new" 4 and 4S models that will decrease in price to the $0 and $99 selling points respectively, likely with slightly reworked designs (like the 4 changed slightly last year), will go on sale alongside the new iPhone on the 21st :apple:

Would be nice if the 8GB models adopted the new charger. I'd wait if that was the case, since my mom and dad will both be new to iPhones and it would be nice for them to have the same plugs (she is getting a 5.)

I can't wait to get home next Friday (hopefully that's the day) to 3 iPhone 5's; my mom's, my wife's and mine. A 16, a 32 and a 64, respectively. :D

That is a feature that I could see being retro-duced into the 4 and 4S. Last year the 4 received the 4S/CDMA 4 Chassis with Sim and world phone options, so it's not beyond the realm of reality for the mini connector to be tossed into an older iPhone that's still for sale.

However, this would devalue the selling point of the 5. It would also make a nightmare for Apple warranty stock of 4 and 4S, because the design would be so different that Apple would have to carry various versions of 4 and 4S' at genius bars.

So I don't think this would happen, but I could be wrong.

The only one it would complicate would be the 8 gb 4, as that was available this year for $100. The 8 gb 4S hasn't existed yet, but will likely become the $100 model this year.

I wondered the same about retro-fitting the new connector but it would require a complete re-tooling of the outer band and presumably cause some compatability problems for replacements etc. On that's basis, I think it's unlikely.
