If you put it in the original box, how should the original box in turn be packaged?

I'd find a second box.
It should be big enough to hold the iMac original box, with a little "extra room" on all sides.

Then, use styrofoam "peanuts" to pack around it.

I believe when I sent my 2010 27" iMac to OWC for a SSD upgrade, they sent me a heavy outer box for shipping, to slightly more than double the thickness of the original box. It apparently worked well, since I had to send it back a second time for a warranty issue, and my iMac continued to work well after that.

It's also not hard to construct an outer box to fit. Making it a bit larger for allow for styrofoam peanuts, or even air pillows, would make sense.

If you are worrying about transporter quality of service, like in my country, I suggest you use plywood box + styro-foam spray for packaging. It may quadruple the shipping weight, but will survive a drop from 3m height.
Styrofoam spray.
