I found an old iPhone 5 lying around and tried 3 passwords. It says its deactivated. Does this mean there is no other way but factory reset?

Without the passcode there's no way in.

Here's a few ways how to restore the phone as new, wiping all the data on it in the process:

I downloaded the free software but when I went through it it's asking for "register the software with the purchased email address and registration code" Is there no way but to purchase this product to make the iPhone usable again?

Lying around where? Go back and ask the people in the area whats the password.

What does the battery have to do with the phone being locked with a password? It won’t magically unlock by replacing the battery
At first I thought it was a battery issue but I forgot to change the title after realizing it wasn't.

I found this instruction but I can't get the power off slider to appear: (it won't appear even when I press the top button for a long time)
iPhone 6s and earlier

  1. Follow the steps above: Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone.
  3. This time connect your device to your computer while pressing the Home button.
  4. Keep pressing the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.
