I went down the rabbit hole this week on keyboard cases. I actually love the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio for the most part. Feature wise, it checked off a lot of boxes that I was sorely missing in the first two generations with the Apple Smart Keyboard Cover:

1) Back protection that is super easy to remove if needed
2) Sleek and light
3) I love how it feels in the hand while carrying it around (no more annoying hump!)
4) I love the typing experience.

I know it's been kind of a "love it or hate it" type of accessory, but I'm in the "love it" camp. However, there are two things I still hate about it:

1) I have a set of iStyles decals on the front and back of the Folio because I got sick of wiping off fingerprints and dirt. (The plus side on this is that it will be pristine whenever I sell it, and I've added some decorative stickers to the decals instead of sticking them directly on the Folio.)
2) I use a TomToc 11" sleeve for when I leave the house with it because there is no side protection. I shudder to think of the scuffs and scratches I might have picked up on the sides by now without this sleeve.

Those two things on my dislike list had my eye wandering to some third party options recently just to see if the grass was greener somewhere else. Last generation when I tried this experiment, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the Zagg Rugged Messenger, which ended up being my favorite iPad case of all time.

Unfortunately, this time around, I'm finding that third party options are getting worse probably at about the same rate that Apple's options are getting better. I just can't find one that dethrones the Smart Keyboard Folio in my mind, even with the compromises. Here's what I prefer in a case:

1) As much protection as possible. (Apple's case is still a failure here as far as the sides.)
2) Stellar build quality. (Apple needs to copy Logitech's silicon material from their current folio case.)
3) Multiple modes of use that are actually convenient. I need to be able to comfortably use the iPad as a tablet AND a laptop/desktop computer.
4) If there is additional Pencil storage, make it so that I don't have to force the Pencil under/out of some kind of hard plastic clip.
5) When the case is shut, there shouldn't be excessive sliding around between the two halves. It should feel at least as solid as a closed hardback book.
6) There shouldn't be any moving parts that can potentially damage the iPad.

So what's your criteria? The Logitech Slim Folio Pro came close to dethroning the Apple keyboard for me, but failed on several of the above items and I just couldn't live with it. All the rest I'm not even going to bother trying because I already know they won't cut it.

nice idea for a thread. I prefer the front only covers to keep things as thin/light as possible. So I'd like:

- keyboard part is detachable when I don't need it, leaving me with a smart cover only, which can also still fold into a stand for watching video
- can be used detached too - so is bluetooth but runs wired/is powered by the ipad when connected physically
- has a trackpad. For this Apple would need to extend the current accessibility to make cursor support more standard, including right click options for context menus which apps can leverage.

Best keyboard would be current ASK but with backlight and some media control keys. Change of material also as the current one is horrible alot of the time as requires alot of cleaning.

I think if the current Apple Folio had side protection and used material more like on the Logitech (similar silicon, but doesn’t seem to pick up finger smudges), I would be 100% happy with it. Right now I’m 90% happy.

The Logitech is so close to a viable alternative for me, but it just slides around too much when closed because there’s way too much slack on that hinge. I wish so much that they had put a couple of magnetic spots on the corners opposite the hinge to keep it solidly closed and that they had the hinge set up so that when you close the case there isn’t so much slack.

My ideal would be something that adds choice

I see where you’re coming from. The first gen options definitely offered more choice. I do feel like the Smart Folio and Smart Keyboard Folio still offer choice because you’re basically choosing between keyboard or no keyboard with roughly the same thickness between the two.

But there’s a reason they don’t call these Smart Keyboard Case or something like that. It’s really not a case. It’s a lightweight, multi mode folio. I do love it as a general cover for carrying around the house, and I’m not one of those people who panics about the bending stuff, but I don’t leave the house without my iPad in its TomToc sleeve. I do not want scuffs and scratches on the sides.

That's the thing though, the first & second gen was a great compromise.

It offered a degree of protection, it offered a keyboard that wasn't dependent on BT, it offered a variety of ways to work with the iPP, and it offered a great variety for personalization. I would love to have that white back cover again, with different colored keyboards, like the Surface Pro used to offer. Apple covered how to stick the pencil to the unit, why not copy the variety of choices?

I really wished Logitech copied their Slim Combo design for the 2nd gen iPad Pro to the 3rd gen model. To me, that 2nd gen design was almost perfect for me. I am not a fan of the Slim Folio Pro design. Now, I have the Brydge Pro for my 12.9 but I long for the Logitech design...

My perfect design would use the Smart Connector, have the keyboard easily detach and reattach, backlit keys, multiple adjustable angles for viewing, and a great typing experience (all present in the Slim Combo design).

Oh man—I HATED the Logitech option for the second gen. I could never get it to stay attached the right way. When I took that one back to the store I ended exchanging it for the Zagg Rugged Messenger, which I absolutely adored. Oddly enough, the Slim Folio Pro this gen has a very similar feel to the 10.5” Zagg, but only on the surface. I could have overlooked the non detachable keyboard on the Slim Folio Pro, but there were just too many other imperfections that bugged me.

For sure. I would love the front and back of the folios to be separate pieces so I could have some side protection. I would not want to give up the flat keyboard half though. I got very tired of the weight and bulk of the Smart Keyboard Cover and hated the ledge in the middle.

When I think of how the Smart Keyboard Folio actually works and fits, it really is the closest one to fit my criteria this gen. I think if they had not made it a folio style cover, we’d be back to square one as far as having to do all that keyboard origami. I don’t see Apple putting a janky kickstand on the back.
