I go away, come back, and when I wake my computer get a message saying - " The computer encountered a problem, Press any key to restart".

Latest OS.

It means unless I save everything before - I've lost my work.

Is the computer plugged into any external displays or devices? I found my 2015 MBP frequently did this with High Sierra if I put it to sleep and then disconnected displays. Apple recommend not doing this.

Thanks for the reply Bob.....Although I do use an external monitor, it does this independently of whether it is plugged in or not. I attach a pic of the message

Hi again, Thats just a standard restart screen - it would be good to see the Console file under "System Reports" for when the Mac rebooted - might shed some light on what caused it. It also might not, though.
