What happens if I rename an external hdd that TM backs up (NOT backing into)? Would TM treat the drive as a "new" drive and backup the entire thing again? Can I still access old backups of files in that hdd before the name change or would they be loss?

TM identifies it's disk by a file stored on the disk, not by it's device name or mount point, so you can freely rename it. Just do a Get Info on the drive, and type in the new name.

Awesome! Glad to hear it's not that stupid. Will try it now.

This also means that TM won't care if I move the files that are being backed up right? It won't re-back them up?
