Apple Gift Cards are one of the most common Apple-related gifts given during the holidays, so if you've received one today, here are all of the things you can and cannot use it for.

After redeeming an Apple Gift Card, the value is added to the Apple Account balance and automatically applies at checkout when making eligible purchases. It can be spent on a wide range of Apple products, services, and digital content.

Apple Gift Cards are marketed as a single, flexible balance that works across Apple's ecosystem, but there are clear limits on what they can and cannot be used for once redeemed to an Apple Account.

What Apple Gift Cards Can Be Used For

  • Purchasing Apple hardware and accessories on apple.com, in the Apple Store app, or in an Apple retail store.
  • Using the balance toward Apple hardware when checking out, with any remaining cost paid using another payment method.
  • Buying apps and games on the App Store, including in-app purchases.
  • Paying for digital media, including movies, TV shows, and books through Apple's digital storefronts.
  • Covering subscriptions to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and iCloud+ storage, as well as eligible third-party app subscriptions billed through the App Store.

What Apple Gift Cards Can't Be Used For

  • Making purchases outside Apple's ecosystem, such as goods or services from non-Apple retailers.
  • Starting certain recurring payments, such as AppleCare+ plans, without an additional credit or debit card on file.
  • Redeeming or using balances across different countries or regions, as gift cards are typically region-locked.
  • Transferring to or purchasing other gift cards.
  • Exchanging for cash or cash equivalents.

While Apple Gift Cards are intentionally designed to be more versatile than older App Store or Apple Store–only gift cards, they still come with some limits. For users, the key distinction is that Apple Gift Cards work best for Apple-direct purchases and subscriptions, but they can't replace a traditional payment method for gifting or non-Apple spending.

Beat me to it!

One thing it can be used for is to completely destroy your Apple Account!

Someone actually did get me a $25 gift card yesterday and I almost didn't even redeem it.

This unfortunately reflects problems in tech based customer service generally. Apple should be better than this, but it is (unfortunately) unsurprising that they aren’t. Customer service agents need alternative ways to solve problems, and not everything should be tied to the Apple account for customer service. And Apple needs to communicate (and possibly figure out) the limitations of their own system to all their customer service agents. The fact that Apple’s agents seemed to think that the account would still work for non-service related things like locking and unlocking devices, but that it didn’t, is beyond asinine (but, again, not surprising).

You also can’t use gift cards online to start ACMI, only in store (last time I checked as a former retail employee).

I’ll get a few cards today that I’ll save for accessories for my upcoming 2026 (folding iPhone hopefully) purchase.

One more for the "can't" list... you can't add them to your account if it will go over $2000.

Yeah that sounds like a corner case but it's a legitimate problem for me. I was unable to use only gift cards for my last Macbook Pro purchase, despite having more than enough in my account and additional cards. And when trading in something, Apple sends a bunch of digital gift cards, which will not fit in my account.

I used to add apple gift cards (some given to me, some from blood donations, some from credit card rewards) to my balance and when I tried to buy my kids laptops last Summer I had nothing but grief. There are a few unwritten rules and limitations that I ran into that couldn't be explained to me. There's some $2k limit, whether it's $2k per transaction or you can't add more than $2k to the account I don't remember. Also if you add a lot of little gift cards, the Apple account magically keeps track of that and you can't use more than eight in a transaction so that fat balance might still be unusable.

I'm letting mine dwindle down by billing my Apple TV+ to it, but if I get a gift card again I hope it's physical.

Scary as hell, honestly. Not going to touch Apple Gift Cards with a ten-foot pole...

I’ve been buying the electronic version from Target for 10-15 years when they have Apple Card deals. The $100 card works out to be $80. I’ve done the same with Amazon. I would assume email delivery from either of those two would be safe only based on the fact I’ve purchased many this way and never had an issue.

I buy these gift cards using Citi Bank Thank You points on cyber Monday. They are 20% off. Note however that Apple limits the amount of money that can be applied to your account. Your balance cannot exceed $2000. I may have gotten a bit nuts since I am planning to buy a MacBook Pro and didn’t realize there were any limits!!!

I’ve had an Apple+ subscription for a while so I’m not sure if iTunes cards are still a thing. This seems more like Apple now has a sort of universal gift card.

Probably a lame question but can you actually still buy music on Apple Music or is it all subscription based? And if so does this card also work for that?

Apple gift cards are a bad gift, give money instead !

I would say gift cards in general are worse than cash. They restrict where and what you can buy. They often have expiry dates or other weird restrictions (like some of the ones we’re learning about in these comments). And it’s surprisingly common for gift cards to never get used before they expire. (https://www.yourlifechoices.com.au/finance/unspent-gift-cards-now-total-1-9-billion/)

This makes gift cards a great idea for big retailers—not so great for consumers!

He had it coming. Foolish of anyone to buy a gift card from anywhere other than straight from the source, especially from shady small shops.
