can't wait for the update, hopefuly its soon

do you think there would be a price drop?

No, not if they give it an i3-processor (don't think they'll go for an i5), and the graphics will probably not be as good, and it will look ugly compared to the macbook pro alu unibody.

The alu is also incredibly strong - The only bad thing about it is that is nicks easier and shows smudges/dirt easier. But with the MBs everyone has trouble with the palmrests breaking and cracking. I pressed down as hard as I could on my 13" MBPs palmrests and the alu didn't budge! There's no way that'd crack in a million years ;)

I am amazed that anyone would buy the Macbook at the moment.

For around 10-15% extra on the price, you could get an:
  • Alu MBP
  • TWO WHOLE processor generations faster
  • about THREE times the raw speed
  • DOUBLE the RAM
  • RAM about 33% faster
  • roughly 50% more disk space
  • Thunderbolt port
  • Firewire port
  • SD card slot
  • Much longer future service life.

Anyone who buys a MB at the moment should be certified insane.

I don't get why you'd cheap out on a 10% difference and get a low-end-mac instead of the Pro version... Apple's a premium brand - So they should probably drop the MacBook IMO.

I agree 100%
899 or even 799 would be great, and I think they would sell a lot more.
But then again, it might interfere with Mac Mini sales.

Apple isn't going to drop the MacBook unless the price of the Pro comes down to $1099. Until that time comes, I believe Apple is going to use an i5 processor, Intel graphics, and faster RAM. The difference between the MacBook and low end 13" Pro have always been very small, with the biggest differences being the aluminum body and backlit keyboard. Plus, there are some people who prefer the white to the Aluminum. I also believe the price will stay at $999.

I would bet the next macbook will have an i3 similar to the base model iMac, 2GB ram (stock) same graphics as current 13" macbook pro and thunderbolt.

The differentiators for the pro model will be aluminum case, i5 processor, more ram, backlit keyboard, firewire 800 port, SD port, IR sensor, battery charge indicator, and bigger HDD plus the option for a SSD.

it would be really stupid to keep 2gb ram on a 1000$ laptop... with 1000$ you can buy a core i5, 4-6gb ram, 1gb GPU laptop of another brand. Of course it won't be a macbook, but it still costs 1000$ for crappy specs.

However most people won't see the diff between an i3 and i5...

I know that buying mine in late '08 broke me but wouldn't change a thing. I only wish I had enough money to buy a MBP. I have Leopard with iLife '08 and wanting to upgrade. Not sure if I should wait till Lion (isn't that next), then buy iLife 11..........suggestions???

Useless mirror screen!

If my Macbook would break tomorrow, I would buy me another Macbook. I'll never buy a laptop with a mirror screen.

Not quite. It's just slightly overdue for an update (see the buyer's guide) and so looks really really bad next to the just-updated MBP. After the MB update, which will probably be within a month, that's when things will get really interesting. It should become quite similar to the MBP, maybe with i3, and missing a couple of must-get features.

Or they'll stick with C2D, put Thunderbolt on, and drop the price. For 99% of my work, even C2D is good enough. The MB needs to sit in that price space between the iPad and the MBP.
