There's so many controllers. What's a good compatible controller to play the MAME games as well as nintendo emulators, others, etc? I prefer the setup of sega style controllers or playstation. I actually tried one of those usb things to support a ps2 controller a while back but it would only recognize about half the buttons.

I use a PS3 controller over bluetooth.

How did you get it to work? I haven't heard of any drivers for OS X, Win, or *nix that allows you to use DualShock3s on a PC.

Anyway, any USB HID-compliant controller will work. This means any PS3 wired controllers will work without issue. This is nice if you want to use an arcade stick with MAME.

If you want something like a DS3, I would recommend any of the Logitech controllers. I haven't had any issues with them for the many years I used it in Windows XP. It won't matter if you buy the mac or Windows version of the controller. They are USB HID-compliant, so you don't have to install the drivers they "recommend" to get it working on a mac.

If you want a Sega Genesis/Saturn controller, I would go with SLS USB Saturn controller. I have read nothing but good reviews of them on sites like http://www.shoryuken.com/ (reviews can be found here). You can usually find them on EBay or Amazon for about $20+.

Just plug it in via USB and it worked, no drivers required. To use it via bluetooth just pair it like yo would any other device.

I use the XBOX 360 wired controller. There is a nice driver for it on the net. The guy also seems to make a PS3 controller driver, although, the PS3 controller driver doesn't come with a PreferencePane.

im trying to use the ps3 controller .. but no matter what i push i cannot get it to insert coins .. even on my keyboard .. ????

Default mame coin in for player 1 is "5". To configure controls to mame, press tab and you can either choose to change controls for all games or configure for just that one game.
