Some configurations are not available at the Apple Retail Store which means third-party or online.

I like the experience of going to an Apple Store and walking out with something expensive. It's all a part of the process for me. I don't like *click, click, click, ding dong!* :p This should be a poll.

Assuming this question does not get asked once a week.

As to the OP, if you are just going to order a stock configuration, go to the Apple Store, only a risk you have shipping problems.

While some configurations are online-only, nothing beats the experience of going to an Apple Store and walking across the mall with your brand new Mac.

Stock configs are usually enough for most people though.

Neither is "better"
It all depends on a variety of factors

If your buying a stock Mac and the Apple store is close enough I would say buy it from the store. In and out in one trip and you have your Mac, no waiting for shipping and the potential it gets damaged or lost. I have done both and preferred buying in store mainly because it was quicker. Only annoying thing was the Apple store was incredibly packed and it took awhile to get an employee, that and I felt like a sardine crammed in a can.

If you buy online, you cannot return the system back to a retail store if anything happens to it.

If you cant get a student discount then you can avoid tax by going online to a site like amazon. The savings is considerable.

I prefer to purchase in store because:
1: Like everyone else, I enjoy the experience of buying a new mac in person and walking out of the mall with it.
2: If you buy a defective mac online, you have to return it and wait for a replacement. Defective retails macs can be replaced immediately in the store.

I prefer online, because you can customize your mac. If I decide to get a notebook, I'd obviously want a matte screen. Since that's a customization, I have to get it online.

personal shop

Book a personal shop.

You can try it out ask some questions if you are unsure about something and then buy it.

A much better experience than online.

Enjoy your new Mac however you get it. :):)

Is Apple some status symbol to you y'uns that you need to walk through the mall with your loot?

Go to the store if it's convenient for you and you'd like to have the product the same day you pay for it. Get it online if you'd like custom-configuration. But there's nothing special about the Apple Store if you're interested in the "experience".
