I was poking around the log files that are transferred to iTunes when you sync your iOS device and I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before. There's a log under ~Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/[your iOS Device name] called "log-aggrigated-[DATE]". It's an XML file which contains some really valuable statistics about the use of your phone. You can open the file using the Console app. Specifically this file contains:

- the number of times you activated an app
- Active time by app
- Background time by app
- Power state changes/wake reasons

I'm not sure if this file is new to iOS 5, but I was easily able to determine why my battery was being drained so quickly. Two of my apps (WhatsApp and Good) had app background times (designated by the key appBackgroundActiveTime.com.[BUNDLE ID]) that totaled to over 2 hours (the integer value below the key is in seconds). Once I reduced the usage of those apps my battery drastically improved.

Anyway, thought I'd share this considering there seems to be a lot of speculation around what consumes battery life.
